The United States Congress established the scholarship in honor of former United States Senator, Barry Goldwater. It is considered the most prestigious undergraduate award given in the sciences.

Perumalreddy Chandrasekaran, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, received the University Merit Award in recognition of superior teaching, scholarship and service to the university.
