Alumni Concert Band Questions and Answers

  • Who is eligible to perform with the Alumni Concert Band?

The following individuals are encouraged to participate in the Alumni Concert Band:

    • Anyone who has performed with any of the Lamar University Bands.
      • Having been enrolled as a student is not required.
      • It is not required that you graduated from Lamar University (or any college or university).   We draw a distinction between the words "alumni" and "graduate".
    • All parents, spouses, and children of LU Band alumni are also welcome to perform as a member of the Alumni Concert Band if they meet the following criteria and if there are seats available:
      • They are high school age or older
      • They can perform at a level appropriate for the ensemble
      • You feel confident that the director of bands at LU when you were a student would approve
      • You feel confident that they are either at a high enough level as to not require extensive practice, or else will take the preparation of music seriously and be ready at the first rehearsal
    • All Texas band directors (no restrictions!)
  • Can I participate in the Alumni Concert Band without performing?
Absolutely!   The registration form will ask if you wish to perform or if you just want to be with us for the weekend as an observer and audience member. Those who do not want to perform are welcome to be at any or all of the rehearsals as an observer and then spend time with everyone during meals or any other social activities.
  • Does it cost anything to participate in the Alumni Concert Band?

The Alumni Concert Band event is FREE!  The only possible cost would be if you live out-of-town and need to stay in a hotel overnight.

The concert is also free and open to the public -- so please invite all of your friends and family!   (Parking is also free at the Julie Rogers Theatre.)

  • Can I miss any of the rehearsal times?

We are preparing for a concert in the Julie Rogers Theatre with only two rehearsals:  one on Saturday morning and one on Saturday afternoon the day before the performance. With that in mind, those who wish to participate on the concert will need to be available for ALL rehearsal times on Saturday, March 25.

If you have extenuating circumstances which you feel justify special consideration on this topic, you may send an email with your request. The final decision as to whether a rehearsal absence or tardy is allowed will be made by Dr. Barry Johnson.

  • What is the required attire for the performance?

The attire will be dressy "all black":

    • Black shoes
    • Black socks, nylons or hose
      • Everyone should be wearing something between their feet and shoes, including ladies.
    • Nice black pants, dress or skirt.
      • No jeans unless they are brand new and are "black jeans"
      • Skirts/dresses should fall below the knee when sitting.   Long skirts/dresses are preferred
    • Nice black shirt, blouse or top
      • It should be "all black"
      • Black button shirts/blouses and very nice/dressy turtlenecks/sweaters are good; but, no t-shirts.
      • A tie is not required, but is OK as long as the tie is all black.
      • A coat is not required, but is OK as long as the coat is all black.
      • A vest is not required, but is OK as long as the vest is all black

Please do everything possible to ensure that your shoulders and ankles are covered.  If you cannot find a blouse/dress/top that covers your shoulders, then a nice black shawl, etc. might be appropriate.

In general, the idea is for everyone to look as similar as possible and as conservative as possible.  Concert band attire is not a time for making a fashion statement -- we want for the audience to be focused on the music, not what someone is wearing.

  • What is the repertoire being performed?

At some point prior to the first rehearsal (most likely in February), the directors will meet and review the list of all those who have registered. Repertoire will be chosen based upon who is signed-up.

After the repertoire has been decided, the directors will review each section and assign parts and chair placements based upon their collective understanding of each person. Solo parts will also be assigned in this way, as needed. Similarly, all percussion parts will be assigned using this same procedure.

Once chairs/parts have been assigned, the sheet music will be provided as downloadable PDF parts. The goal is to provide the sheet music to all performers 2-3 weeks prior to the event to allow for individual practice and preparation!

  • What are the details on the final concert?

The Alumni Concert Band will perform on Sunday, March 26 in the Julie Rogers Theatre.  The concert is free and open to the public (no tickets are required.)   The doors will open at 3:30pm.

The concert begins at 4:00pm with the Lamar University Wind Ensemble.   After their performance, there will be a short intermission to reset the stage, and then the Alumni Concert Band will perform.

It's hard to say for sure how long the concert will last; however, it's usually a good idea to estimate for about one hour to one hour and 15 minutes per band.  So, probably around 2 hours in total, or a little more.
