The bands at Lamar University are open to all students, regardless of major, and scholarships are available to qualified students.

The Lamar University Marching Band, "The Showcase of Southeast Texas", performs at all home football games and select away games. Under the direction of Dr. Eric Shannon, the marching band performs for thousands of fans and alumni each year at football games and exhibition performances in Texas and Louisiana.

Directed by Dr. Andrew McMahan, the Wind Ensemble is the premiere large ensemble at Lamar University. The Wind Ensemble has performed at many state, national and international conventions including the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), American Bandmasters Association (ABA), College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA), and the Western International Band Clinic Conference.

The Cardinal Jazz Orchestra, directed by Rick Condit, is open to both music majors and non majors, and provides an opportunity to develop skills in playing the varying styles of jazz and commercial music encountered by today’s working musician, as well as a platform that encourages the development of skills in improvisation and the practical application of music theory in performance situations. The Cardinal Jazz Orchestra has appeared at the Wichita Jazz Festival, the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), and the International Association of Jazz Educators Conference.
