The fast-paced whodunit, The 39 Steps, was adapted by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan and the 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock. Mix Hitchcock's cinematic masterpiece with a juicy spy novel, add a dash of Monty Python and you have Tony-Award winning comedic thriller, The 39 Steps. In the play, a man with a boring life meets a woman with a thick accent who says she's a spy. When he takes her home, she is murdered. Soon, a mysterious organization called "The 39 Steps" is hot on the man's trail in a nationwide manhunt that climaxes in a death-defying finale. A riotous blend of virtuoso performances and wildly inventive stagecraft, The 39 Steps amounts to an unforgettable evening.

In “Mrs. Warren's Profession,” Vivie Warren is a promising young woman; a recent college graduate with a career waiting for her in London who has always had everything she's ever wanted because of the generosity of her mother. However, this mother - Mrs. Warren - is a mysterious woman whom Vivie barely knows. When her mother surprises Vivie on a visit with several of her friends, Vivie confronts her mother about her career and her past, and what follows is a free-wheeling argument about the relationships between family, gender, economy and morality. “Mrs. Warren's Profession,” first written in 1894 and not staged for another 10 years because of its controversial subject matter, still resonates over a hundred years later as one of the greatest plays written in the English language.
Fall & Recovery Dance Concert

The Department of Theatre and Dance at Lamar University will present its fall dance concert, Fall and Recovery, Nov. 13 - 15 in the University Theatre. The evening of dance works encompasses many genres including tap, jazz, musical theatre, modern and contemporary, and is choreographed by LU dance faculty and select students.
Victoria Brown, choreographer and dancer for television, print and music videos, will be a guest artist in the production.

Based on the children’s book series A Year with Frog and Toad; Arnold Lobel's treasured characters hop from the page to the stage in a story of friendship and adventure. Our play opens as hibernation ends for the lovable character Frog and his grumpy best friend Toad. Follow our characters as they plant a garden, go swimming, rake leaves, go sledding, and learn life lessons along the way. The two best friends celebrate and rejoice in their differences that make them unique and special. Equal parts make believe and vaudeville style theatre are paired with a jazzy score by Robert Reale that bubbles with melody and wit, making it an inventive, exuberant and enchanting musical that kids of every age are sure to enjoy.

Lamar University’s Department of Theatre & Dance will perform Shakespeare's beautifully tragic tale of love at first sight, “Romeo and Juliet,” April 7 through 10 in the Studio Theatre. Join in the worldwide celebrations commemorating the legacy of William Shakespeare on the 400th anniversary of his death in April 1616 with this production headed by guest director Rutherford Cravens. In LU’s New Orleans-based version, Romeo and Juliet secretly wed despite the sworn contempt their families hold for each other, setting off a chain of fateful events that changes both families forever.
Dance Unleashed Concert

Our spring dance concert, Dance Unleashed, is a family-friendly concert featuring ballet, hip hop, modern, tap and contemporary dance styles. The event will showcase distinctive, original works choreographed by LU faculty, guest artists and students. The concert will also feature a special guest performances by students from the Department of Dance at Tainan University of Technology in Taiwan, who will be on campus for a study abroad program with LU's Department of Theatre and Dance.
Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30, and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1. The University Theatre is located at 4400 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway on the LU campus.
Tainan University Dance Company: Journey of the Mind
May 3 at 7:30 p.m.
LU's Department of Theatre and Dance presents a special dance performance featuring students from Tainan University of Technology in Tainan City, Taiwan. The 16 students from Tainan's Department of Dance are on campus for a study abroad program/cultural exchange with the theatre and dance department. They will take part in the department's spring dance concert, Dance Unleashed, April 29 - May 1, and then will perform their own dance exhibition, “Journey of the Mind” on May 3.
Based on the elements, Journey of the Mind, portrays freedom of movement with natural props such as silk and bamboo representing wind, water and stone. For more information, contact LU's Department of Theatre and Dance at (409) 880-8037.
