Scholarships

  • Charlsie E. Berly Scholarship

A four-year award of $700 annually to an entering freshman history major.

  • Daughters of the American Revolution/Virginia D. Weir Memorial Scholarship

An annual award for approximately $300 to a junior-level student specializing in American history.  Sponsored by the Col. George Moffet Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

  • Daughters of the Republic of Texas Scholarship

An annual award of $100 for a history major planning to pursue a career in teaching.  Sponsored by the Tejas Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

  • Dr. Samuel L. Evans Memorial Scholarship in History

Endowed scholarship of $600 annually, open to both graduate and undergraduate history majors. Given in honor of Dr. Sam Evans, member of the Lamar University History Department, 1959-1964.

  • Harold and Eleanor Fritze Scholarship

Endowed scholarship of $600 annually awarded to a junior-level history student.

  • Dr. Howell H. Gwin, Jr., Endowed Scholarship

Endowed scholarship of $600 annually. Preference to graduate students but open to all history majors.

  • Walter A. Sutton Memorial Scholarship

Endowed scholarship of $700 annually, open to both graduate and undergraduate history students.

  • Peter Boyd Wells, Jr., Scholarship in History

Endowed scholarship of $840 annually, given in honor of Peter B. Wells, Jr., founding trustee of the Lamar University Foundation who helped establish the Lamar Library Associates and who donated his extensive Texana collection to the university.

  • Preston B. Williams-Ralph A. Wooster Scholarship

Endowed scholarship of approximately $750 awarded to a graduating senior student who has been admitted to the College of Graduate Studies and to the graduate program in history pending completion of the bachelor's degree. Intended to encourage students to become teachers of history at either the secondary or college levels.

  • Ralph and Edna Wooster Scholarship

Endowed scholarship of $1000 annually to a junior-level history major.

  • Texas Gulf Historical Society Charlsie Berly Scholarship

Endowed scholarship of approximately $180 to a junior-level history major.

Fellowships

James Madison Fellowship

Named in honor of the fourth president of the United States and acknowledged “Father of the Constitution and Bill of Rights,” a James Madison Fellowship funds up to $24,000 of each Fellow’s course of study towards a master’s degree.  That program must include a concentration of courses on the history and principles of the United States Constitution.  For more information, visit www.jamesmadison.com.
