Undergraduate Program

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in History at Lamar University offers you several options in terms of focus and an end result: you may choose the B.A. in History as a standalone program, or you may opt to add six hours for history or social studies teacher certification.

General Requirements

Beyond Core Requirements

You must complete a foreign language, which substitutes for the communication requirement in the core, and 3 semester hours in literature. 

Major

  • HIST 1301, 1302 – American History – 6 semester hours
  • HIST 2321, 2322 – World History – 6 semester hours
  • HIST 3390 – Historical Research – 3 semester hours
  • Advanced (4000- level) courses: 6 semester hours in U.S. History, 6 semester hours in World/Non-U.S. history and another 3 semester hours in either U.S. or World/Non-U.S. history
  • HIST 4391: Capstone - 3 semester hours

You must earn a grade of C or better in all history courses and a C or better in English 1301 and 1302. 

Minor

An approved minor of 18 semester hours with a grade of C or higher. You are required to take HIST 1301, HIST 1302 and either HIST 2321 or HIST 2322. You must complete 9 hours of advanced (4000-level) electives.

Electives

Sufficient approved electives to complete a total of 120 hours. Within the 120-semester hours program there must be a minimum of at least 119 semester hours of courses that may not include physical activity courses, health and wellness courses and intern program courses.

Students who began their course of study under previous degree plans are not obligated to meet the requirements of the degree plans shown here. History majors may keep the plan under which they entered the program.
