Favorite leadership quote: "Leaders instill in their people a hope for success and a belief in themselves. Positive leaders empower people to accomplish their goals."

Why you chose LU: I chose Lamar University because they have one of the best ASL programs in the country and I was ready for a new adventure!

Favorite part of working with NSLP: My favorite part of working with NSLP has been the number of opportunities for growth. I really appreciate how much ownership I have as a student in the programs we facilitate.

Advice for new students: College is the time where you find out a lot about yourself, if you stumble and fall, give yourself a break, you're learning to walk.

Jo Smalley - Student Orientation Coordinator

Classification: Integrated

Major: Accounting

Favorite Leadership Quote: “Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.” - Arnold Schwarzenegger

Why you choose LU: Reason 1: Lamar has an accredited business school, Reason 2: Lamar is close to family, Reason 3: My parents fell in love here

Favorite part of working with NSLP: My favorite part about working for the office of NSLP is giving back to the office that has given me so much. The office is like a beacon of hope for new students that helps them navigate campus and campus life.

Advice for new students: Don't pressure yourself into meeting arbitrary deadlines. It's very important to try and get involved with campus life during your first semester, however if you don't meet your people until later that's ok, there isn't a deadline.

Jonah Smith - Student Orientation Coordinator

Classification: Sophomore

Major: Mechanical engineering

Favorite leadership quote:He who cannot be a good follower cannot be a good leader”

Why you chose LU: “I chose LU because it was always common to see a Lamar football shirt in my closet growing up - my family has always had close ties with Lamar with living so close and by attending high school sporting events that were held here. So, it was the obvious choice, and I’m happy that I made this choice”.

Favorite part about working for NSLP: “My favorite part of working with the NSLP has to be the networking opportunities that it offers. It allows me to work with so many talented groups and individuals as well as connecting with new students in order to meet their needs and make Lamar the best it can be.”

Advice for new students: “My advice for any new student at Lamar would be to get involved with just one organization/group/ etc. Give one of them a try and I can assure you that it will lead to a desire to be even more involved, and before you know it you will have had an amazing college experience. Don’t be afraid to branch out and try new things! There is a limited time you will have at Lamar so make the most of it!”

David Williams - Student Orientation Coordinator

Classification: Senior

Major: Mechanical Engineering

Favorite leadership quote:If ‘leadership’ has come to be known as something much bigger than us, aligned to changing the world, then we are spending way too much time celebrating things that hardly anyone can do and not celebrating things we can do every day.”- Drew Dudley

Why you chose LU: I chose LU because it's always been LU. I grew up going to lots of summer camps here, and I'd gotten to know some of the faculty. It made the most sense, especially considering Lamar's remarkable engineering program.

Favorite part of working with NSLP: My favorite part of working with NSLP is that I have the privilege of working with an amazing group of people that have a passion for helping others. We get a lot of ownership over the programs and events we help facilitate, which truly allows our devotion to our mission to shine through and gives us a chance to do our best work for the Lamar community.

Advice for new students: Get involved and stay involved! Your time at Lamar will be so much better if you try new things and become a part of things you enjoy and are passionate about.
