Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to come to the Student Health Center?
The office visit starts at $10.00 and increases in price as procedures, lab orders, and medications are added. There is a price list in each room. The provider can let you know what each item costs, so please ask during your visit. Charges will be billed to your student account.

Do I need to have insurance to come to the Student Health Center?
We are glad to see you, regardless of insurance status. We work to keep the prices as low as possible in order to make healthcare accessible to all students. Charges will be billed to your student account, so please feel free to inquire about prices during your visit.

Do you file on my insurance?
We do not file on any insurance except TriCare and the Academic Health Plans. There will be a statement available on the Patient Portal that will have all the necessary information for filing on your health insurance. Some health plans support online filing, eliminating the need for printing and mailing a claim.

Do I need to make an appointment?
Yes, call 409-880-8466 between the hours of 7:30 am - 5:00 pm to schedule an appointment. We make every effort to get you in as soon as possible. Calling early in the morning increases your chances of being seen the same day.

Do you have the bacterial meningitis vaccine?
Yes, the cost is $155.00, paid in advance at the Cashier's Office in the Wimberly Building. Call for an appointment first at 409-880-8466. We will need your student ID and photo identification to set up your account.

I need a TB test. What should I do?
Click here to read the latest information regarding the tuberculosis (Tb) test. Call or come by the Student Health Center to make two appointments. The first is to receive the injection, and the second is for the nurse to examine the injection site. If a Tb hold is involved, the hold will be removed the morning after your test is read.

Do you prescribe oral contraceptives (birth control)?
We can make you an appointment with one of the nurse practitioners to discuss birth control options. In some cases, a well woman exam may be necessary before a prescription will be written. The birth control pills we carry here are approximately $20.00 per month and the Depo-Provera shot is $105.00 every three months. The nurse practitioner can also provide a written prescription for contraception.

Do you sell pregnancy tests?
No, we don't sell over the counter pregnancy tests. You can make an appointment to see the nurse practitioner and get tested if you are concerned about pregnancy.

Can I get my Depo shot at the clinic?
Yes, bring the records from your doctor and the nurse practitioner will review them and determine if we are able to continue your injections. The cost without insurance is $105.00 per injection. We do not file insurance, but a statement will be available on the Patient Portal to file on your health insurance.

The nurse practitioner gave me some medication. Do I pay now?
Any medication given to you during an office visit will be billed to your student account. You can pay it online or at the Cashiers Office in the Wimberly Building.

What does Academic Health Plans (Student Health Insurance) cover?
Academic Health Plans covers all office visits, lab work, and vaccines. It does not cover oral medications or pharmacy items. Please ask about coverage for medical items used during treatments of injuries.

Does the Student Health Center do physicals?
The Student Health Center does allied health physicals (such as nursing, health information management, child care), walk-on football, and athletic training physicals. The cost is $40.00. We don't do "functional" physicals such as those needed for the fire, police, or EMT programs.

I have a prescription from an outside pharmacy. Can the Student Health Center pharmacy fill it?
The pharmacy can fill prescriptions from outside providers, but you must see a SHC provider to have it rewritten.  A list of SHC pharmacy stock medications are listed on our website. Please call for an appointment to have your prescription filled here.
