Short Term Programs

Every year, Lamar University faculty lead various programs abroad. This year, we have 11 programs headed to Brazil, Estonia, Thailand, Italy, and other fascinating locations!

The programs below are set to embark this coming summer (2022), COVID-19 permitting. Additionally, we have two winter mini faculty-led programs headed to Spain and Thailand in 2023 (next winter).

  • Psychology in Italy

    Political and Multicultural Psychology (PSYC 4301)

    Prerequisites: General Psychology - PSYC 2301

    June 23 – July 4, 2022

    3-6 credit hours

    Highlights:

    • Stroll the medieval streets of Florence, taking in all of the sights, sounds, and culture of Italy
    • Visit with refugees in the villages of Riace and Camini and have a sit-down discussion with local experts in Italy’s refugee crisis
    • Experience Renaissance masterpieces of art and architecture up close, and immerse yourself in the history of art
    • Live like a local in a city-center apartment
    • Visit Venice and the Venice Biennale to embrace contemporary art

    Program Cost: $3,000 + LU Tuition and airfare

  • Art and Design in Italy

    Arts 4392 Studio & Arts 4338 Renaissance

    Prerequisites: NONE!

    May 23-June 23, 2022

    6 credit hours

    Highlights:

    • Stroll the medieval streets of Florence, taking in all of the sights, sounds, and culture of Italy
    • Study at one of the top art and design schools in Italy, the Santa Reparata International School of Art
    • Live like a local in a city-center apartment
    • Experience Renaissance masterpieces of art and architecture up close, and immerse yourself in the history of art
    • Visit Venice and the Venice Biennale to embrace contemporary art

    Program Cost: $6,991 airfare included + LU Tuition

  • Media in England

    International Media Studies (COMM 4396)

    Prerequisites: Comm 1373 or ENGL 1301 suggested

    July 15 - 30, 2022

    3 credit hours

    Highlights:

    • Learn all facets of travel reporting, from long-form features to short “how-to” pieces and blogs
    • Visit the Brighton newspaper, The Argus, to learn about local reporting in a large town
    • Live in a historical and culturally significant city
    • Visit historic Lewes, home of the Protestant martyrs, a castle, a prison and a brewery
    • Tour the historic Royal Pavilion and take a trip to the Tower of London
    • Take a ferry ride from Newhaven to Dieppe, France.

    Program Cost: $3,100 airfare and breakfast included + LU Tuition

  • Media Studies in Estonia

    International Field Reporting and Media Studies: COMM 4396

    Prerequisites: Comm 1373 or ENGL 1301 suggested

    July 6 - July 22, 2022

    3-6 credit hours

    Highlights:

    • Immerse yourself in the heart of Old Town and modern Tallinn
    • Experience Helsinki which is often ranked “the happiest city” in the world
    • Complete collaborative projects tailored to student areas of interests and research
    • Publish in LU student media and portfolios
    • Earn a special media certification from Tallinn University’s Centre of Excellence in Media Innovation and Digital Culture
    • Tour the 32-member nation NATO Cooperative Cyber Defense Centre of Excellence, Skype’s corporate HQ and Estonia’s Public Broadcasting service
    • Touring cultural and historical sites in 2 countries covering the medieval, Cold War and modern time periods
    • Ferries across the Baltic Sea between Tallinn and Helsinki

  • Biology in Belize

    Tropical Terrestrial & Watershed Biology: BIOL 4432; BIOL 5432 (4 credit hours)/ Tropical Marine Biology: BIOL 4452; BIOL 5452 (4 credit hours)

    Prerequisites: BIOL 1406 & 1407 General Biology I & II (majors)

    June 2 - 15, 2022

    8 credit hours

    Highlights:

    • Perform research while in the Neotropical rain forest and on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef
    • Explore watersheds of neotropical biomes of the Maya Mountain pine ridge, rainforests, and savanna
    • Investigate the coral reef, seagrasses, and mangroves of Tobacco Caye
    • Learn about the environmental collapse of the ancient Maya of Caraco and sustainability practices for present-day Maya

    Program Cost: $3,650 airfare and meals included + LU Tuition

  • Geriatric Syndromes in Brazil

    Geriatric Syndromes: A multidisciplinary Intervention (SPHS 4350)

    Prerequisites: ASL 2

    This course is open to undergraduate and graduate students of all majors who have an interest in developing skills and strategies to work in a multidisciplinary program for geriatric syndromes.

    May 15 - 27, 2022

    3 credit hours

    Highlights:

    • Study at one of Brazil's most popular universities, located on Rio de Janeiro
    • Learn about geriatric syndromes and attending to classes in a multidisciplinary scenario
    • Experience university life with students from Rio de Janeiro
    • Participate in a variety of activities, explore a diverse landscape, varied food, and discover nearby regions as Arraial do Cabo and Angra dos Reis

  • Deaf Studies and Deaf Education Courses in Barcelona

    Interpreting and Tourism (DSDE 332) Classification of Structure (DSDE 3326/4350)

    6 credit hours

    Highlights:

    • Take Interpreting and Tourism and Classification of Structure this summer while walking the sunny streets of Barcelona, Spain
    • On this trip, we will be visiting historic sites, including museums, churches, monuments, beaches and other unique public spaces.
    • We will learn how to interpret in tourism and how to describe art and architecture in a 3-dimensionalspac
    • This tourist-friendly destination creates awe and wonder in everyone who visits

  • Deaf Culture and Sign Language in Thailand

    Deaf Culture and Sign Language in Thailand (DSDE 4350)

    January 4 – January 14, 2023 (next winter)

    3 credit hours

    Highlights

    • Experience real language immersion in Thailand through cultural interactions with Deaf Thai People
    • Understand diverse Deaf identity and communication style utilized within Deaf communities
    • Visit a local Deaf school in Hua Hin Enjoy time to explore the beaches of Hua Hin
    • Explore the Mae Taeng Valley and visit the Elephant Nature Park
    • Visit the Suan Dusit Sign Language Interpreter Training College
    • Experience the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

    • Learn advanced Spanish and live the Spanish culture firsthand from the masters of Salamanca University
    • Discover amazing sites in Salamanca, such as the Plaza Mayor, the New Cathedral, as well as the Casa de las Conchas
    • Visit other historic cities including: Toledo, Andalucía, Segovia and El Escorial
    • Receive distinctive certificates that are awarded by the University of Salamanca
