After I Apply

Congratulations on your decision to study abroad! I am certain that it will be an amazing experience for you. Our students have deemed Lamar University Study Abroad Programs as "life changing." We are here to try and make sure that you have a positive academic and personal experience abroad.

Your application is not complete until you pay the $200 application fee.

1) Apply for a Passport

As soon as you decide to travel abroad please apply for your passport. Passport processing can take several weeks.

2) Consult with your academic advisor to be enrolled in the study abroad course related to your program.

*Academic advisors may lift the study abroad hold and enroll a student in the corresponding course if the course is degree counting. If the course is not degree counting, a student can still participate, but will not be eligible to receive financial aid.

3) If you are on financial aid and file a FAFSA and would like to see if this funding will help you pay for the program, bring the sheet below with you when you speak to your advisor. Have the advisor sign off that the course is degree counting and return the form to the Financial Aid Office in Wimberly Building.

4) Complete the Study Abroad Student Packet

5) Fill out any scholarship applications online (see this page for list). We encourage you to click on the link for each scholarship if you are interested in a specific scholarship as deadlines may have changed.

All students that meet the criteria are eligible for a $200 Study Abroad Fee grant. Please apply as soon as you decide to study as funds are limited. If you receive the grant, the money will come in the form of a disbursement to your student account after 2nd payment date.

If you receive a scholarship of at least $500, we will allow you to deduct this cost from your program. The office will need proof of your scholarship. Please send proof of scholarship to studyabroad@lamar.edu

6) Make payments at lamar.edu/studyabroad.

Click "Make a Payment" near the middle of the page. LU tuition and fees are separate from your program cost. The Program cost includes; site visits, housing, ground transportation, and cultural activities. In many cases, your program cost also includes airfare. You can find out what your program cost includes by visiting our Paying for Your Program page.

7) Submit a color copy of Passport and Visa, if applicable, to the Study Abroad Office (by email or coming by the office and letting us make a copy)

The Office of Study Abroad and your program faculty leader will need your passports and visa to pay for airplane tickets. The office will keep the signed ID page of your passport on file. This is required by the university and allows us to supply a visual of these documents in case you misplace them while traveling.

8) Attend Mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation. (DATE TBA)

At this orientation you will receive insurance card, emergency contact card, and study abroad T-shirt. If you are out of state, we will give the orientation via phone and send your items with the lead faculty member.

10) Book flight and submit flight itinerary (if required by program, ask if unsure)
