Biography

Barbara has worked as an American Sign Language/English interpreter for more than 39 years. She holds certifications as a Texas Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) Master Interpreter, Court Interpreter and Level IV Interpreter. She came to Lamar in 2010 and earned a Bachelor Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) in 2012. Barbara has worked the last eight years at LU, starting in the Disability Resource Center, interpreting with Deaf students, Deaf faculty and Deaf staff. She now serves the department of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education as the Sr. Designated Interpreter, and her primary duty is interpreting with Deaf faculty and Deaf staff.

Barbara has been instrumental in the development of the Deaf Blind intervener coursework within the ASL degree program and serves as a staff sponsor of the ASL Cardinal Community.

Barbara has actually been involved in the Deaf community all her life, as she is considered a Heritage signer and is a Child of Deaf Parents (CODA). Barbara is the current Vice President and Past President of the Golden Triangle Interpreters for the Deaf. She is the current Mentorship Committee chairperson with the Texas Society of Interpreters for the Deaf. Barbara is an active volunteer, serving in various positions, with the Deaf Blind Camp of Texas.
