Concrete Canoe Competition

The concrete canoe is sponsored by ASCE and Master Builders. Students design, research and build a concrete canoe strong enough to race and light enough to pass the swamp test. The canoe is completely submerged underwater and must float to the surface 6 inches out of the water.

Students research different types of material to mix into the concrete, finding the exact mixture for strength and proper weight. Normally one team will design the concrete mixture and another will work on the physical structural design. The design and construction of the canoe is not just important for viewing by the judges, the students race them, with the results of the race counting heavily on the final outcome. Scoring is based on a technical paper, oral presentation, final product of canoe and the races.
