About

Social Work Faculty

Welcome to the Social Work Program at Lamar University.  Social Work is an exciting and growing field with ever expanding opportunities for graduates.  Our outstanding faculty, excellent program, and great learning resources enable students to achieve their academic and career goals.

The Social Work Program offers a nationally accredited Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree.  If making a difference in the lives of others is important to you, then a degree in Social Work may be a good fit.  Students who graduate from the Lamar University Social Work Program are prepared to work in many settings and are eligible for licensure upon graduation.   Our students enter the profession with direct experience in the field. BSW students are required to complete a 400-hour field placement (internship) during their final semester which gives them an opportunity to apply the skills learned during their education.

Students in the Social Work Program at Lamar University enjoy excellent learning opportunities through a multidimensional approach.  In the classroom, students are engaged in active learning focused on developing the knowledge and skills needed to work with diverse populations in the generalist setting.  Students gain hands-on experience through volunteer activities at local agencies, simulation exercises, and field placements.

Social work students benefit from faculty members’ research and experience on numerous topics ranging from children and violence, women’s issues, human trafficking, HIV/AIDS, technology in social work, etc.  Faculty encourage students to engage in undergraduate research and mentor students through research programs such as the McNair Scholars Program, Undergraduate Research grants, and Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF).

We are proud of our graduates of the LU Social Work Program.  The majority of our students have secured employment and/or are accepted into graduate school at the time of graduation.  As you can determine from these highlights, our students gain the knowledge, skills, and abilities to join the dynamic field of social work.  This is an exciting time to be a social worker and the Lamar University Social Work Program can assist you in making your career goals a reality.
