Courtney Sutton

Head Cheer and Dance Coach

Courtney Sutton has over thirty-two years of training and experience in the spirit programs industry as an athlete, coach, choreographer, and instructor. A native of Knoxville, TN, she trained as a dancer from early childhood through college in a range of styles including ballet, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, lyrical, pom, modern, and kick, as well as competed on the state and national level while captaining her high school dance team. Since then, she has taught in studios, managed competitive dance companies, and been the Head Coach of various dance teams ranging from middle school to collegiate ages, including Middle Tennessee State University's Dance Team and Sam Houston State University's Orange Pride. Her background also includes thirteen years on Universal Dance Association Staff, part of Varsity Brands, as an Instructor, Head Instructor, and Custom Choreographer. During her career, she has taught or choreographed for teams and studios in over twenty-five different states and has also worked various spirit team events across the country, from the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York to Cheer and Dance Worlds in Florida. Not only has she judged many competitions throughout the Southeast, including the Louisiana, Alabama, and Georgia State Dance Team Championships, but her choreography also frequently wins awards at competition, such as the National Dance Alliance Collegiate National Championship's "Best Choreography Award." After returning to Knoxville and completing her bachelor's degree in Psychology at the University of Tennessee, she is now excited to be the Head Cheer and Dance Coach at Lamar University in Beaumont, TX. Matt Allen

Assistant Cheer Coach

Matt began his cheerleading career as a sophomore at Spartanburg High School, where he lettered in both track and cheerleading every year until graduation. From here his passion for cheerleading intensified as he began to teach tumbling at the local gym Flip Tyme, and has since coached tumbling and all-star cheer teams for over nine years at multiple gyms in Spartanburg, SC. In addition to coaching and teaching, he worked to develop his personal technique, eventually earning a scholarship to cheer on the Coed Cheer Team at Limestone College, located in Gaffney, South Carolina. During his five years cheering for the Limestone Saints, Matt would earn the “Top Tumbler” award for three years, was selected by the coaches to be a “Team Leader” for three years, and in 2016 Limestone College awarded the Cheer Team the “Team of Distinction.” Matt was also a proponent of helping to grow the program from being noncompetitive his first year to competing at the National Cheer Association Collegiate National Championship for the four following years, placing in the top five in their division for his final three years. While in his fifth year of cheering for Limestone, Matt also began coaching at High Point Academy for both the Varsity and Middle School teams. In the course of attending NCA Camp at Myrtle Beach, SC with Limestone, Matt was recruited to become a member of Varsity Brand’s NCA Speed Staff and will now be entering his fourth summer traveling the country to teach cheerleading teams of all kinds and levels. He is eager to now be joining the Lamar University Spirit Program as the Assistant Cheer Coach and to become a part of building a competitive, nationally recognized cheer program here in Beaumont, TX just as he helped to do at Limestone College.
