FAQs

WHAT IS INTRAMURAL SPORTS?
Intramural Sports is a program offered by the Department of Recreational Sports. We offer a variety of competitive and recreational activities for members of the LU/LIT campus. Games are played against other LU and LIT students, faculty, and staff. Some activities include flag football, basketball, soccer, and volleyball.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PLAY INTRAMURAL SPORTS?
Intramural Sports is open to all currently enrolled, fee-paying Lamar University and Lamar Institute of Technology students and LU/LIT faculty and staff who are paid Recreational Sports members. Intramurals are free of charge and everyone is encouraged to participate. Each participant must show a valid LU or LIT student or faculty/staff ID card in order to participate.

WHAT LEAGUES ARE OFFERED?
Intramural Sports has Men’s, Women’s, and Co-Rec leagues. These three leagues are divided into Open and IPC divisions. IPC divisions are set up for Greek chapters and Residence Halls. Those affiliated with a fraternity, sorority or a residence hall may compete in these leagues. Anyone unaffiliated may compete in the Open division. To see what sports are available, check out the Intramural Schedules.

HOW MANY PLAYERS MAY I HAVE ON MY TEAM?
Each sport has its own rules for how many players can play, due to the number of players needed for that sport. Each sport also has a minimum number of players needed to avoid a forfeit. Please refer to the Intramurals Rules for sport-specific questions about team rosters. Also, each sport page on IMLeagues shows the maximum number of players allowed to be on a roster.

HOW DO YOU SIGN UP A TEAM?
Both individuals and teams must sign up using IMLeagues.com. Sign-up deadline dates are listed there. For a detailed list of onsite sign-up instructions, see the Registration page.

  1. Each participant must make an IMLeagues.com account but clicking on Sign Up at IMLeagues.com.
  2. Once logged in to IMLeagues.com, click on the sport that you want to sign up a team for. Our leagues will be set up by divisions according to day and nights.
  3. Teams will sign up for their desired night of play/time of play by clicking on the proper sport’s division and then clicking on Create Team. Each division will have a max limit, so will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
  4. One team representative must attend the mandatory captain’s meeting for the desired sport. Failure to attend the meeting will result in a team forfeiting their first game of the season.

I WANT TO SIGN-UP, BUT I DON’T HAVE A TEAM.
If you've been asked to join a team, go to IMLeagues.com and:

  1. Click on the sport you are interested in playing.
  2. Search for the team through the leagues and divisions.
  3. If the team has set up a password, you will need to enter the team password and click Join Team to add yourself to the team or you can be automatically added, if the team was set up for that.
  4. The team captain must approve you request to join the team.

If you're interested in playing in a sport, but do not have a team, you may register as a Free Agent:

  1. Log in to IMLeagues.com and click on the sport and division that you would like to play in.
  2. Click on Join As Free Agent tab on that division’s page.
  3. Enter your student id, and read and agree to the policy terms and conditions.
  4. Write a message to the team captains including which sport(s) you are able to play, and any other necessary information.

Intramural Sports does not guarantee that you will be able to play if you sign up as a free agent. We will try our best to place you on a team.

WHEN ARE THE GAMES?
Games are generally held Saturday through Thursday from 5:30 pm to 10:00 pm. Teams may play once or twice a week. Saturday and Sunday games are usually mid-morning until mid-afternoon.

WHERE ARE THE GAMES HELD?
Intramural Sports games are held at the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center or at the Intramural/Club Fields. The Intramural/Club Field is at the corner of Jimmy Simmons Blvd and Jim Gilligan Way, on the west side of Vincent-Beck Baseball Stadium.

IS THERE AN ENTRY FEE?
No, Intramural Sports no longer charges teams or individuals to play. The only cost that is charged is when a team forfeits a match. Then, that team must pay a $20 forfeit fee to be allowed to continue playing.

WHAT DOES A FORFEIT MEAN, AND HOW CAN I AVOID GETTING ONE?
A team forfeits if they fail to have the minimum number of players present at game time. If a team forfeits for whatever reason, that team will be assessed a $20 forfeit fee. The forfeit fee must be paid by 3:00 pm on the day of the team’s next scheduled game. Failure to do so will result in the team being removed from the league. The Intramural Staff will not accept forfeit fees at the game sites. It is the entire team’s responsibility to know when its games are scheduled and to show up on time. We recommended that teams show up 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time so that games may begin on time. If a team forfeits twice, it is removed from the league and will not be allowed to compete in playoffs. GAME TIME IS FORFEIT TIME!

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A FORFEIT AND A DEFAULT?
A forfeit occurs when a team fails to have the minimum number of players present at game time. The team must pay a $20 forfeit fee by 3:00 pm on the day of their next scheduled game. The team will receive a 1 for sportsmanship.

A default is when a team notifies Intramural Staff that their team cannot play a scheduled game at least 24 hours in advance or by 3:00 pm on Friday for Saturday and Sunday games. A loss will be assessed for the default, but the forfeit and $20 forfeit fee will be avoided. The team will receive a 2 for sportsmanship. A team is only allowed to default one game during the season. After that, defaults will be counted as forfeits.

CAN I WORK FOR INTRAMURAL SPORTS?
Intramural Sports hires and trains many sports officials each fall semester. If you love sports and are looking for a fun on-campus job, visit jobs.lamar.edu.

WHEN DO ROSTERS FREEZE?
Throughout the regular season of each sport, team captains may add and accept players on their team at any time. Players may also sign in on the score sheet on site, but must still join on IMLeagues to officially be on the roster. Rosters are frozen at 3:00 pm on the first day of playoffs for each sport. Anyone planning to participate on your team in the playoffs MUST be on your team’s IMLeagues roster.

IS TODAY'S GAMES CANCELED BECAUSE OF WEATHER?
Sometimes, games are canceled due to inclement weather. Typically, a decision about the status of games for the evening is made at 3:00 pm. If this happens, we'll let participants know three ways:

  1. We'll send an email/text message sent to all players on IMLeagues.com
  2. We'll post cancellations on Twitter @IntramuralsLU and Facebook @IntramuralsLamar.

HOW MANY TEAMS CAN I JOIN?
A participant may play on one team per division, for a maximum of five teams. Again, our divisions are:

  • Open Men/Women
  • Open Co-Rec
  • Fraternity/Sorority
  • Res Halls Men/Women
  • Res Halls Co-Rec

HOW MANY CLUB PLAYERS CAN PLAY ON ONE INTRAMURAL TEAM AND WHAT IF I HAVE A CO-REC TEAM?
Each calendar year, an Intramural team may have no more than two (2) players on its roster who are members of a Sport Club related to that Intramural Sport. This includes men's and women's clubs for Co-Rec Teams. The only two-person club pairings that a Co-Rec team may have are:

  • Two women
  • Two men
  • One woman and one man

DO I NEED AN ID TO PLAY?
Yes! All Intramural participants must present a valid LU, LIT, or Cardinal Village ID card to participate in any Intramural activity. Lamar State College-Orange and Lamar State College-Port Arthur students are not eligible. If your ID card is lost or stolen, you must provide a valid photo ID to participate.

CAN I PLAY INTRAMURALS IF I PLAYED A SPORT IN COLLEGE?
Players must not be listed on the varsity roster or squad list in the same or related sport for the current academic year. Former collegiate athletes are eligible to play Intramurals after a full academic year from their last semester. For example: an athlete played collegiate football in Fall 2015. That player will not be eligible to play a football-related sport until after the Fall 2016 semester has ended. Flag Football is offered in spring semester, so they will be eligible to play in that semester.
