Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC)

As the cornerstone of oversight for research involving recombinant and synthetic nucleic acid molecules, Lamar University IBC reviews research protocols that involve the use of potentially biohazardous materials and agents, recombinant and synthetic nucleic acids and the use of tissue isolated from vertebrates.

The purpose of these reviews is to ensure that all activities involving these materials, and the facilities used to conduct such work, are in compliance with all applicable external regulations and University policies.

Required Training

The Biosafety Training Course is a required course offered through CITI. Training is intended for researchers handling biohazards in a research or clinical laboratory. Lamar University IBC requires protocol and lab approval for conducting experiments with various biohazards.

Additional Information

The IBC will review projects involving hazardous biological materials, including:

  • Recombinant DNA (as defined by the NIH guidelines and including transgenic animals and plants)
  • Select agents (defined by 42 CFR Part 73, 9 CFR Part 121, and 7 CFR Part 331)
  • All RG-2 or greater human or zoonotic pathogens
  • Strict animal and plant pathogens that are either reportable or non-indigenous to Texas
