Lamar University has named kinesiology senior Karen Damien the July First-Generation Student of the Month, recognizing her dedication to higher education and the example she hopes to set for her family.
As a first-generation college student, Damien said her educational journey is rooted in the sacrifices her family made to provide opportunities they never had.
"I am a proud first-generation college student because of my family and the sacrifices they have made to give me opportunities they never had," Damien said. "Their hard work and support have allowed me to pursue higher education, and every accomplishment I achieve honors everything they have done for me."
Damien said she is especially motivated by the opportunity to inspire her younger sister to pursue a college education.
"I most importantly hope to set an example for my little sister by showing her that with hard work and determination, anything is possible and higher education is within her reach," she said.
Lamar University's First-Generation Connections program supports students whose parents or guardians did not complete a four-year college or university degree in the United States. The program is designed to equip first-generation students with the academic, social and personal resources they need to succeed throughout their college experience.
Recognizing that the challenges first-generation students face extends beyond the classroom, the program fosters a supportive campus network that helps students build community, access resources and thrive during their time at Lamar University.
