Lamar University’s Department of Theatre and Dance will present its annual “Dance Unleashed” concert April 24–25 at 7:30 p.m., with an additional 2 p.m. matinee April 25 in the University Theatre.
The performance, which serves as the conclusion of the department’s spring season, will feature student performers in a variety of styles, including modern, contemporary, tap and jazz. The concert highlights the work and training of dance students while showcasing original choreography developed throughout the semester.
A centerpiece of this year’s program is a new work created during a weeklong residency by guest artist Billy J. Hawkains III, a Detroit-born choreographer, educator and researcher. Hawkains worked closely with students to develop the piece, which will be premiered as part of the concert.
In addition to setting the new work, Hawkains led two master classes and additional workshops in Safety Release Technique (SRT), a movement practice that emphasizes sustainability, expression and physical rigor. He is one of only three certified master teachers of the technique.
Hawkains holds a Master of Fine Arts in dance choreography from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance performance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
Amy Elizabeth, assistant professor of dance, said Hawkains’ residency added depth to the students’ preparation for the performance.
“I’m thrilled to have Billy join us for Spring 2026 and introduce Safety Release Technique to Lamar University students,” she said. “In a recent conversation for episode nine of the Dance Unscripted Podcast, we discussed the importance of understanding the body’s knowledge, how students approach dance training and the role of resilience in the arts. He brings an unmatched energy and new ideas that I know will enhance students’ performance and training experiences.”
