Hatter, a senior sociology major from Houston, is among the many students at Lamar Universitywho are the first in their families to pursue a college degree, a distinction the university highlights through its monthly recognition program.

“I am very blessed and thankful to be recognized as a First-Gen Student,” Hatter said. “I am honored and proud to have the opportunity to lead by example for my siblings and see my family happy that I’ve achieved the goals they’ve pushed me to attain.”

The First-Generation Student of the Month program celebrates students who demonstrate perseverance, academic commitment and a dedication to paving the way for future generations in their families. Hatter’s recognition reflects both his personal accomplishments and the broader impact of first-generation students across campus.
