Department of Theatre and Dance to present Whale Music

The Lamar University Department of Theatre and Dance is pleased to present their first production of the Whale Music semester, “Whale Music,” written by Anthony Minghella and directed by Joel Grothe, associate professor of theatre. The production will be held in the Studio Theatre on Feb. 17-19 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Feb. 20 at 2 p.m.

An acutely sensitive story, “Whale Music” is a moving portrayal of the lives of a group of women which reflects the attitudes and feelings of women today, depicted in a series of settings which flow gently into each other. Caroline, pregnant by one of her boyfriends, escapes to her seaside birthplace where she is visited by friends. The reaction of these women to each other whilst awaiting the birth is sympathetically told and we become totally involved in the heights and depths of their collective emotions and thoughts.

"This play is a lost gem. It was written by Minghella before he became famous writing and directing movies. I had no idea he wrote plays. The play seems to be among his most personal work, as it is set on the Isle of Wight where he grew up. The location becomes one of the most important characters in the play," said Grothe.

Tickets for “Whale Music” are available for purchase now at lamar.edu/LUTDTIX. Prices range from $7-$15. For more information about the Department of Theatre and Dance, please visit lamar.edu/theatre.
