MLK celebrations planned at LU

The Office of Global Diversity and Inclusive Excellence at Lamar University is hosting several events to honor the legacy for civil rights and service of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

"This is one of the first events that the Office of Global Diversity and Inclusive Excellence hosts for the spring semester, and we are excited to start the new year honoring one of the greatest leaders that this world has ever known, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” said Dr. Wilma Jackson, director of Diversity & Inclusive Excellence. “Now more than ever, we have the opportunity to reap the benefits of the great work that he started."

On Thurs., Jan. 21, the Rev. Michael Cooper, president of the NAACP Beaumont Chapter, is the keynote speaker at a celebration themed, "Transformation: Where do we go from here." The event, co-sponsored by the Office of Global Diversity and Inclusive Excellence and the LU NAACP Student Chapter, will be held in the Plummer Room on the 8th floor of the Mary and John Gray Library from 4-6 p.m. Those not attending in person can watch it live at www.facebook.com/lamaruogdie.

Cooper received his bachelor’s degree in business with a minor in social work from LU. He earned a master’s degree in psychology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and is the founding pastor at the Church of I Am. Cooper has served on numerous boards and was a candidate for Lt. Governor in 2018 and U.S. Senate in 2020. He has been a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People since he was a teenager.

At the celebration, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Visionary Leader Scholarship recipient will be awarded to a Lamar University student(s) who continues to carry Dr. King’s virtues and dream forward for inclusiveness, global vision and service to the institution and the greater community. Winner(s) will receive a one-time award of $500 that will be added to their fall 2021 Lamar University financial aid packet.

On Sat., January 23, Lamar University students, staff and faculty will provide a Day of Service at the Southeast Texas Food Bank. Due to accommodations for COVID-19, registration is limited. Get details and register.
