Detailed Information

Lamar University international graduate admissions

Application types - Which application type should I submit?

Applications to Lamar University are submitted through ApplyTexas.org. On that website, you will be asked what type of application you wish to submit, which include:

  • U.S. Graduate Application
  • International Graduate Application
  • Transient Application

Applicants who have special statuses or circumstances might be confused as to which application type is most appropriate for them to submit. Please review the guidance provided below to help determine which application type best fits your situation.

International student applications:

Many applicants visiting this guidance will likely select an “International” type application from ApplyTexas. International applications to Lamar University should be submitted by applicants who meet one of these qualifiers:

  • You are outside of the US and intend to obtain a F or J Visa to enter the US and study on-campus
  • You are inside the US with any lettered Visa type (F, J, H, B, etc.) and intend to obtain a degree from Lamar University
  • You are a not a US citizen, outside of the US, and intend to apply to an online-only degree program.

Applicants who intend to enroll in an online-only degree program should note that Lamar University will be unable to issue any immigration documents (such as the SEVIS I-20) for a Visa application. Applicants outside of the US are still welcome to apply for an online degree program at Lamar, but they cannot be assisted by our International Services office.

U.S. student applications:

“U.S.” Domestic applications are reserved for US citizens and non-US citizens with certain circumstances. Applicants with the following statuses are eligible to submit a U.S. application from ApplyTexas:

  • Dual citizens of the US
  • Permanent Residents
  • Those with an active I-485 application for Permanent Residency
  • Refugee status
  • Asylee status
  • Temporary Protected Status
  • DACA or undocumented applicants
    • These applicants are encouraged to learn more about Texas’ SB 1528 regulation which can allow them to study with in-state tuition rates.

International Transient Applicants

Some F or J Visa students may currently be attending another university or college but wish to only take one or two classes with Lamar University that may transfer to their degree plan there. Those applicants should submit a “Transient” application. Your SEVIS record will not be accepted as part of your acceptance, and you will need to submit a copy of your current university’s understanding that you will be taking classes with Lamar.

Application requirements - What documents should I expect to submit for my admission?

Following the submission of an online application to the Admissions office, International applicants should expect to submit the following:

  1. Official Transcripts or Transcript Evaluation
  2. Admissions Test Scores (GRE, GMAT, or any other scores required by the Admissions office)
  3. English Proficiency Scores (Popular tests include the IELTS and TOEFL exams)

After you submit your formal application form ApplyTexas, the Admissions office will review that application and determine what exact documents will be needed to complete your application. You will receive an email at the address included on your application from their office, and it will list those requirements. Please note that you will not be able to upload any documents through ApplyTexas.

We encourage applicants to fully review the information on the Admissions Office’s webpage, especially for the application type they have submitted. However, those who wish for further clarification on their document requirements may need to contact either gradmission@lamar.edu or your major’s academic department.

Types of Admission – Will I be given unconditional admission?

International applicants who meet academic acceptance requirements will be given an admission type based on their English Proficiency test scores:

Regular Admission - You meet all university, departmental and language proficiency admission requirements. You may enroll directly into the academic program you have applied for.

Conditional Admission
Offered to students who meet all university requirements except for language proficiency. Conditionally admitted students are required to enroll in ELS Language Center classes and must successfully complete Level 112 Intensive Program. Upon completion (Level 112 Intensive Program), these students are eligible for admission to Lamar University by submitting an updated application.

Acceptance Letters

Acceptance letters will be issued electronically by the Office of Admissions and the Department in which the student has been admitted. You should expect to receive a copy at the email address you used in your admissions application.

Special Note - International Transfer Students

Transferring students with foreign university credits and wish to ensure those credits will apply to their Lamar degree are advised to bring English translations of their course syllabi and the course descriptions for those courses.  The student should also be aware that they will have to petition their academic department for each course as to whether the transfer credits will be accepted as equivalent to the Lamar University requirement.
