Chemical Engineering Program Reaccredited by ABET

Lamar University’s bachelor’s degree program in chemical engineering has been reaccredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology.

ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies and are anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.

“ABET accreditation is recognized as the global standard and demonstrates that LU’s chemical engineering program meets the quality education standards specific to the discipline,” said Brian Craig, dean of the College of Engineering. “Maintaining our ABET accreditation demonstrates LU’s commitment to provide a quality engineering program that provides a solid educational foundation, providing our students the capability to lead the way in innovation, emerging technologies and anticipating the safety and welfare needs of the public.”

Sought worldwide, ABET’s voluntary peer-review process is highly respected because it adds critical value to academic programs in the technical disciplines, where quality, precision and safety are of the utmost importance.

Developed by technical professionals from ABET’s member societies, ABET criteria focus on what students experience and learn. ABET accreditation reviews look at program curricula, faculty, facilities and institutional support and are conducted by teams of highly skilled professionals, who have expertise in the ABET disciplines from industry, academia and government.

“These standards are essential to produce graduates ready to enter their engineering futures,” said Craig. “Additionally, graduation from ABET-accredited programs may also establish a student’s eligibility for many federal student loans, grants and scholarships, is often a mandatory requirement for employment and supports entry to many technical professions through licensure, registration and certification.”

ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization with ISO 9001:2015 certification. It currently accredits 4,005 programs at more than 793 colleges and universities in 32 countries.
