Special Education at Lamar University

It is the goal of the Master of Education program to provide teachers at the graduate level with the tools needed to support exceptional learners’ educational needs in K-12 schools. Both concentrations are 36-credit hour, non-thesis master’s degree programs and both require completion of a comprehensive examination upon completion of all required coursework.

The Department of Educational Leadership at Lamar University offers online the following options for graduate work in Special Education:

M.Ed. in Special Education (Generalist)

The M.Ed. Special Education Generalist, 36-credit hour degree program, offers advanced coursework at the graduate level in the area of special education. This degree program provides graduate learners with the content, knowledge and skills they need to assess, instruct, and provide behavioral support for exceptional learners from an inclusive, collaborative perspective. Admission requirements: Teaching credentials in any K-12 certification area. This program does not provide eligibility for initial certification in special education. The program can be completed in 18 months with continuous enrollment.

M.Ed. in Special Education (Educational Diagnostician)

The M.Ed. in Special Education (Educational Diagnostician), 36-credit hour degree program, offers advanced coursework at the graduate level in the area of special education which includes coursework needed for certification as an Educational Diagnostician. This degree program provides graduate learners with the foundational knowledge in the field of special education and the content, knowledge, and skills they need to identify and place K-12 learners in special education services. There are two 15-week practicum courses (SPED 5321 and SPED 5322) which are offered in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. Enrollment in the SPED 5322 course requires completion of an application and approval prior to enrollment into the course. Admission requirements: a valid Texas teaching certification and 3 years teaching experience in a TEA-approved district. Upon completion of this program, graduates are eligible to take the Educational Diagnostician certification exam. The program can be completed in 21 months with continuous enrollment.

Important Notice:
Students seeking certification as an Educational Diagnostician who are enrolled in either the M.Ed. Special Education-Educational Diagnostician or Certification as Educational Diagnostician program, will need to make arrangements with respect to access to test kits for the following assessment instruments (Woodcock Johnson- Achievement, Woodcock Johnson- Cognitive, WISC) AND retain a certified Educational Diagnostician from within their school  and/or district who will supervise their use of such instruments. Lamar University, the College of Education and Human Development, and the Special Education program do not provide such test kits or make arrangements for site mentors.

Certification as Educational Diagnostician

The Educational Diagnostician Certification, 21-credit hour degree program, provides coursework to those students who have valid Texas teaching credentials, 3 years teaching experience, and already a hold a master’s degree in a related educational field (i.e., masters in Teacher Counseling, Education Administration, Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Policy, and Special Education, Early Childhood Education, etc.). There are five 5-week courses, and two 15-week courses (SPED 5321 and SPED 5322 which are offered in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters). Enrollment in the SPED 5322 course requires completion of an application and approval prior to enrollment into the courseUpon completion of this 21-credit hour degree program students will qualify to take the Educational Diagnostician certification test. The program can be completed in 18 months with continuous enrollment.
