School Counselor Certification

Candidates in the School Counseling Program begin planning for certification early in the program by becoming familiar with the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs. You must take the TExES School Counselor Exam within one year of graduating from Lamar University. Out-of-state students, you must be familiar with the certification/licensure process of your previous states.

Applying to test

You must pass the Lamar School Counseling competency exam to be approved to take the TExES School Counselor exam. You must complete an application to be eligible to take the TExES School Counselor exam.

Applying for certification

After passing the TExES School Counselor exam, you must apply with both LU and TEA to be recommended for certification in School Counseling.

Approval takes up to 6-8 weeks after the master’s degree is conferred.

Applying to Retest for Certification

A remediation review is required before you are able to retake the TExES School Counselor Exam. The process to complete the remediation review, please email sccertexamcommittee@lamar.edu.

After completing the remediation review, you must complete an application to be approved to retake TExES School Counselor exam. Attach your Remediation Review Score report, TEA examinee score report and a valid educator certificate.
