Lamar Programming Team Attends Contest

Programming Team at the Contest

The date was Nov 11. The location this year was at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana.

These are two pictures for our ACM regional contest trip. The first one was taken after the contest and the second one was when we had a tire burst on our way heading to the site (students loved the second one very much).

Lamar sent two teams to the November ACM ICPC South Central USA Regional Programming Contest in Hammond, Louisiana.  The teams were accompanied by their coach, Dr. Xingya Liu, Assistant Professor of Computer Science.

The image above shows both teams.  Team “D.A.M” (left) consisted of Madison Boudreaux, Ann Chapple and David Espinosa.  Team “Garbage Collectors" (right) consisted of John Comeaux, Thomas King and Thomas Norris.  Dr. Liu is shown in the center of the image.  “Garbage Collectors” placed 28th overall out of 71 teams while “D.A.M” placed 40th.  The various teams were from Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana.  The two Lamar teams ranked #2 and #4 out of the 16 teams at the Hammond Louisiana site.

“Members of Garbage Collectors are veterans but with more academic burden this year, so they didn't beat their last year's score due to the lack of practice. On the other hand, we are glad to see members of D.A.M. - all of them are rookies - achieving an awesome beginning in days of their ACM lives,” said Dr. Liu.

Programming Team on the road

On the way to the contest the van team members were riding in had a flat tire.

“I would like to praise all the efforts our students made to conquer that flat tire on that long, narrow bridge in that dark, chilly night. I also appreciated their calmness, kindness, optimism, and teamworking shown through this event,” Liu said.  “I see the bright future of our students”
