Lamar University breaks ground on Cardinal Village IV

Ground work begins
Cardinal Village

Lamar University has broken ground on Cardinal Village IV, a $16-million expansion of its state-of-the-art residence halls. Davis Brothers Construction of Houston will build the residence hall.

Cardinal Village IV will be completed by August 15, 2007, adding 500 beds to campus. When completed, the entire Cardinal Village complex will include more than 2,000 beds.

The residence hall will be virtually identical to Cardinal Village III, which opened in fall 2004. Lamar's Cardinal Village was 100 percent full in Fall 2006, with about 120 students living in Brooks Hall. Spring occupancy is greater than 95 percent.

The new residences are being built between Cunningham and Cheek streets, just south of Iowa Street and north of the John Gray Center. The new complex will face north.

The new construction follows a series of new building projects at Lamar University, including the completion of a new dining hall, opened January 2006, and the new Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center, opening this spring.
