The Lamar University Dance Company will present an entertaining and diverse evening of dance works from LU students and faculty at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16, and Friday, April 17, in the University Theatre. The program, created by dance faculty members Lou Arrington, Harriet Lihs, Julie Parker and Golden Wright, will feature ballet, modern and jazz dance forms.
Guest performers from San Jacinto College, South Campus, will join about 50 Lamar dance students for the concert. In addition, acclaimed choreographer and Southern Methodist University faculty member Lauren Thompson choreographed several of the student dances.
One of the many highlights of AttenDANCE will be the student composition presented by Jalissa Williams and Angel-Marie Goines. The two dance majors have incorporated live music created by another dance student, Amanda Kelly, into their performance.
"What Jalissa and Angel-Marie have done is quite an achievement,” said Michelle Ozmun, interim director of dance. “It can be challenging to collaborate as choreographers, as they have, and it also can be very difficult to incorporate live music. The result of their work is quite sophisticated for young choreographers.”
Lamar University dance faculty will also perform at the concert. Instructor Golden Wright will perform an improvised piece with Ozmun. They will not even know the musical selection beforehand. Julie Parker will present a dance number set to the “Cell Block Tango” from the musical Chicago.
“Our audience can expect variety and experimentation—a mixture of favorites and things they’ve never seen before,” said Ozmun.
Tickets are $10 general admission, $5 for senior citizens and students. Please call Michelle Ozmun at (409) 880-7799 for more information.
