The public is invited to a free performance Friday, Jan. 30, of Melissa Waddy-Thibodeaux’s acclaimed one-woman show, “The Resurrection of Harriet Tubman for Literacy on the Underground Reading Railroad.” The historically-based dramatic reenactment will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the University Theatre.
Waddy-Thibodeaux, a Houston native, will hold an interactive workshop for Lamar University theatre majors from 1 – 4 p.m. in the University Theatre. The Lamar students will then perform with Waddy-Thibodeaux in the show for the general public.
“We are thrilled to offer this event to the community in celebration of the upcoming Black History Month,” says Adonia Placette, director of theatre at Lamar. “Lamar Theatre strives to always be a community partner for Southeast Texas, and we hope the community will take part in this dynamic, educational show.”
An actor, storyteller and playwright, Melissa Waddy-Thibodeaux’s popular portrayals of Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks have educated and entertained audiences throughout the world. In 2008, Gov. Rick Perry honored Waddy-Thibodeaux as a finalist for the Humanities Texas Award, which recognizes imaginative leadership in the humanities on a local, regional or state level.
