On behalf of the entire Lamar University community, we would like to congratulate you on your decision to attend LU! You have made an incredible decision that will change your life forever, and we are excited you have selected LU.
Big Red Rally is a one-day orientation experience for new students. Students attending the Big Red Rally will arrive in the morning and spend the day attending orientation activities and taking care of business. Students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor prior to their orientation session to be advised. Students will meet with their Dean and academic advisor, register for Fall classes, and get their student ID and My.Lamar account. Student organizations and university departments will be on hand to answer questions. Contact the Admissions department to make sure that all testing requirements have been fulfilled. Parents and other family members are valued members of the Lamar family. Family Orientation provides the perfect opportunity to meet members of LU administration, faculty, and staff; become better acquainted with LU policies and procedures; gain valuable information regarding financial aid and police security.
The cost for the Big Red Rally is $35. This fee covers the cost of all orientation materials, breakfast, and lunch. Family Orientation is a separate program from the New Student Orientation Program, but will run simultaneously on the day of the Big Red Rally.
The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a state mandated placement program. Students must take either the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) or a state approved alternative to determine whether or not they are ready for college credit course work. Student required to take one of the TSI approved tests may take either the THEA, THEA-QT, ACCUPLACER, ASSET, or COMPASS. The Career and Testing Center at Lamar University offers the THEA, THEA-QT, and COMPASS for students who need one of these tests. Some students will be exempt based on SAT, ACT, or TAKS scores.
Students will not be able to register for class unless their TSI requirements have been fulflled.
You can register for any New Student or Family Orientation Session by visiting the Lamar University website (http://www.lamar.edu/) and clicking the New Student Orientation banner. You must pre-register to attend all sessions.
