David J. Beck Fellowships

The David J. Beck Fellowships reward outstanding academic achievement and allow top students to further challenge themselves with unique opportunities for undergraduate research and creative study.

David J. Beck Fellows Receive:

  • Full academic scholarships covering all tuition, books, fees and on-campus room and board.
  • Up to $10,000 in funding for a summer project, which may entail research, an internship or international study.

Beck Fellowship Recipient

Beck Fellowships are awarded to up to two fellows for one calendar year. Each fellow chooses a Lamar University faculty member as a project mentor.

The fellowship supersedes all other LU scholarships, which normally will be restored upon completion of the fellowship.

 

Application Requirements

Beck Fellowships are awarded competitively to outstanding scholars. Applicants must be:

  • full-time Lamar University undergraduate student in any major who will not graduate before the end of the fellowship year
  • 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average
  • good academic and disciplinary standing

If the applicant has not completed a full semester at Lamar University, eligibility will be established by:

  • a SAT score (CR plus math) of 1250
  • an ACT score of 28 or above, or
  • a ranking in the top 10% of the high school graduating class.

A transfer student is eligible with a 3.50 or above on 12 or more academic hours at the previous institution. 

Complete application packets must be submitted to the Office of the Associate Provost (Wayne A. Reaud building, Room 310) no later than the designated deadline.

A completed Beck application packet includes:

  • A completed application
  • A resume
  • A statement of financial need
  • Two letters of recommendation (separate from project mentor)
  • Support letter from proposed project mentor
  • A description of and budget for the proposed summer experience
  • A personal essay explaining how the fellowship would help the student achieve personal and professional goals



The 2024 application deadline has been extended to January 16, 2024.

  • Maintain your GPA - 3.5 or greater
  • Connect with former Beck Fellows
  • Contact your project mentor early
  • Continue to fine-tune your summer projects (Two projects submitted only one chosen)
