Stay Compliant with Texas Senate Bill 17 when working on your website.
In 2023, Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 17 into law, “Responsibility of Governing Boards Regarding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Initiatives,” which amends Texas Education Code § 51.3525 effective January 1, 2024.
Under Texas Senate Bill 17, public higher education websites must be scrubbed of terms like "DEI" and "diversity, equity, and inclusion". Universities are barred from promoting programs that grant special benefits based on race, color, or ethnicity, or linking to former diversity offices.
Websites and digital content must be updated to reflect the following constraints:
- Removal of DEI Branding: All references, acronyms, and web pages specific to "Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion" (DEI) and related terms must be deleted.
- Permissible Outreach: Institutions can maintain information targeting first-generation students, low-income students, or underserved populations, particularly if this data is for grant applications or accreditation reporting.
- Abolished Offices: Links to institutional DEI offices, centers, or staff directories dedicated specifically to DEI must be completely removed.
