In April 2023, the Lamar University Health Education Department hosted the WAMIHS event in honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) 2023. Students, faculty, and staff gathered in the Setzer Student Center to hear about sexual assault statistics and then experienced walking a mile around campus in the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes organization's signature red high heel shoes. This year's annual WAMIHS event was a great success in raising awareness of sexual assault and prevention!
On February 25, 2023, over 350 people gathered at the Lamar University Setzer Center to raise awareness of suicide prevalence, fundraise for suicide prevention education, and to honor those who have been affected by suicide either through personal struggle or through loss of loved ones.
In partnership with AFSP.org, Lamar University campus and community raised over $14,000 for suicide prevention education and programming. This would not have been possible without the help of Lamar University, H-E-B for graciously supplying guests with snacks and drinks, and local mental health organizations.
Thank you to the LU and LIT community for coming together to make this year's Out of the Darkness event a huge success.
During the month of April, the Health Education Department organizes multiple events for the student body in honor of sexual assault awareness month (SAAM). In 2023, we continued the tradition of hosting Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, providing teal ribbons on SAAM kick off day and Denim Day. We also created new programs for SAAM, which included a Creative Healing: Arts and Crafts session! A 2-hour break from the hustle and bustle of classes that allows students to heal in a positive environment with other survivors and allies. Health Education also promoted a large banner signing for SAAM survivors. Look for it next year at our SAAM tabling event so you can sign your message of support or sign your name!
