Immunizations

Meningitis

Availability: Meningitis vaccines are available at the SHC subject to stock availability. All prices are subject to change. An appointment must be made and the vaccine must be paid for before the immunization administration. Please call (409) 880-8466 to make an appointment. Other sources for the vaccine include pharmacies, doctor's offices, and clinics.

Requirement: The latest information regarding the bacterial meningitis vaccine is available on the Office of Admissions and Recruitment website.

Meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV-4) covers 4 strains of meningitis (A, C, Y, W) and meets the state requirements for admission into an institution of higher education. Although highly recommended, the Meningitis-B vaccine does not meet the state recommendations, nor is it required for admission.

Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is an infectious, bacterial disease, and an infected person may have one of two types of TB. In a person with tuberculosis disease, also known as active TB, the bacteria are multiplying, making the person sick. This person can also spread the bacteria to others.  In a person with latent TB infection, also known as LTBI or inactive TB, the person's immune system prevents bacterial multiplication, thus preventing illness and the spread of the disease. Unfortunately, if the immune system weakens, the bacteria can start multiplying, at which time the person develops active disease.

TB Testing is available for all students. International students must follow the regulations outlined in the Tuberculosis Screening Policy. For an appointment at the Student Health Center, call 409-880-8466.

Two TB tests are available at the SHC. The QuantiFERON TB Gold+ blood test requires just one office visit. The other test is the TB skin test.

The TB skin test requires two office visits. During your first office visit, you receive your injection. The second visit should be scheduled 48 hours later. During the second visit, you are checked for a reaction to the injection.

Tuberculosis Screening for Lamar University

Students whose academic program requires TB testing should follow the requirements of their program.

International Students: In 2013, Lamar University implemented a tuberculosis (TB) screening policy for all students on an F or J visa. A TB hold prevents class registration.

Complete these steps to manage your TB hold:

  1. Complete the TB Screening and Health History forms in the Student Health Center Patient Portal.
  2. After your forms are reviewed, you will receive an email in your Lamar email instructing you to log in to the Patient Portal for the review results.
  3. If you are told that testing is not required, your TB hold will be released.
  4. If you are instructed to have TB testing, your TB hold will be temporarily released so that you can register for classes. A due date for testing will be included in the message.
  5. Those who are required to have testing must have a QuantiFERON TB Gold+ OR T-Spot test PERFORMED IN THE UNITED STATES. Students insured by Lamar University's student insurance plan may obtain free testing at the Student Health Center.
  6. Further steps may be required, based on your test results. A positive result will not keep you from attending Lamar University.
  7. Failure to complete any additional steps assigned will result in the TB hold being reactivated. This will affect your progress in your chosen program.

All TB testing must occur in the United States, and documentation must include the following:

  • Name of the medical facility performing the test
  • Date of the TB blood test blood draw.
  • Date the TB blood test was resulted.
  • QuantiFERON and T-spot results must state “negative” or “positive”.
  • Documentation signed by a qualified and licensed health care provider.

Documents that do not meet these requirements may be rejected.
