Ayna Arif named November First-Generation Student of the Month

Lamar University (LU) has recognized Ayna Arif, a senior psychology major on the pre-medical track, as its November First-Generation Student of the Month. First Gen Student of the Month

A Beaumont native, Arif said being a first-generation college student has given her the opportunity to pursue her own goals while recognizing the opportunities that were not available to previous generations of her family.

"I am proud to be first-generation because I have the opportunity to shape my own path through the choices I make every day," Arif said. "The freedom to choose my future is a luxury that many of my family members before me did not have, so I am grateful to be able to make the most out of every opportunity that comes my way."

The recognition is part of LU’s First Generation Connections program, an initiative within the Division of Student Affairs that provides resources and support to help first-generation students succeed academically and personally.

At LU, first-generation students are defined as those whose parents or guardians did not complete a four-year college or university degree in the United States. The program works to address academic, social, emotional and physical barriers by building a campus network that encourages student success and engagement.

For Arif, her educational journey also represents an opportunity to encourage others to pursue futures they may not have previously considered.

"I hope to inspire others to believe that they, too, can create a future that is so much greater than what they once thought was possible," she said.

The First Generation Connections program recognizes students monthly for their experiences and achievements. Members of the LU community can nominate students for recognition through the program's website.
