ZaMorria Terrell named August First-Gen Student of the Month

Lamar University has named senior ZaMorria Terrell as its First-Generation Student of the Month for August 2026, recognizing her academic achievement and perseverance as a first-gen student.

A Houston native, Terrell is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in public health in healthcare administration. As a first-generation college student, she said earning a college degree represents more than a personal milestone.

"Being first-generation means a lot to me because I'm doing something that no one before me in my family has done," Terrell said. "I'm extremely grateful for all the accomplishments I have achieved. Even when college gets hard, I keep pushing because I know I'm opening doors not only for myself but for the generations that come after me. That's what makes me proud."

Lamar's First Generation Connections program celebrates students like Terrell through initiatives such as the First-Generation Student of the Month recognition, which highlights individuals whose stories exemplify determination, leadership and academic success. The program also hosts networking events, educational workshops and community-building activities throughout the year to ensure first-generation students have the support they need to thrive.

Terrell said her experiences have strengthened her resolve to persevere through challenges and continue building a legacy for her family.

As she prepares for graduation, she hopes her journey will inspire other first-generation students to pursue higher education with confidence and remember that every milestone achieved creates new opportunities for those who follow.

"I know I'm opening doors not only for myself," Terrell said, "but for the generations that come after me."

Her recognition as August's First-Generation Student of the Month reflects both her personal accomplishments and Lamar University's ongoing commitment to supporting first-generation students through programs that empower them to succeed from enrollment through graduation.
