The exhibition, “Curious Figure 3,” will be held at the Star Store Gallery and features artists from 38 cities across 21 states. Organized by The Siren Scene, the show highlights contemporary approaches to figurative painting, drawing and printmaking.

Meeks, a painting and drawing professor in Lamar’s Department of Art and Design, will exhibit a piece titled “American Dream #13.” The exhibition is curated by artist and educator Kat Knutsen, and Joe Vaux, a director known for his work on the animated television series Family Guy.

“I’m honored to be included in a national exhibition that brings together so many contemporary figurative artists,” Meeks said.

Meeks, originally from Louisville, has taught at Lamar University for decades, offering courses in oil painting, watercolor, color theory and drawing. She previously served as chair of the Department of Art and Design from 1995 to 2021.

She holds a Master of Fine Arts in painting and sculpture from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and both a Master of Arts in Teaching and a Bachelor of Arts in art from the University of Louisville.

Since 1981, Meeks’ work has been featured in more than 160 exhibitions nationwide, including venues such as the Butler Institute of American Art and the Alexandria Museum of Art. Her work is also included in several permanent collections in the United States and abroad.

Her artistic practice explores themes of the human condition, often focusing on the surface of the body as a site of personal and cultural meaning. Through series examining skin, injury and healing, Meeks connects physical marks to broader questions of identity, mortality and experience.
