Lamar University has named William Hammers, a psychology senior, as its February first-generation Student of the Month.
Hammers is a first-generation college student, meaning his parents or guardians did not complete a four-year college or university degree in the United States. His recognition highlights perseverance and determination in returning to college after time away.
“The thing that I am most proud of is that, despite a few setbacks, I managed to persevere and make it back to college after such a long break to finish my degree,” Hammers said.
Hammers’ story reflects the mission of Lamar University’s First Generation Connections program, which works to ensure first-generation students have access to the tools, resources and support needed to succeed. The program recognizes that challenges faced by first-generation students extend beyond academics and may include social, emotional and physical barriers.
First Generation Connections encourages the Lamar University campus community to support and engage with first-generation students by helping build a strong network where students can thrive and grow.
