Lamar University has named Sherronice Wilkins, a family science major from Houston’s Trinity Gardens, its First-Generation Student of the Month.
Wilkins, a senior, said her journey has been defined by resilience and a determination to rise above obstacles.
“With cards being dealt at odds and being able to overcome and make the best out of the situation you are in, that is what makes me proud,” Wilkins said. “To remain resilient through the trials that come to snatch your focus, to be able to carry my last name and open doors that it hasn't seen, to not remain a stigma and inspire my community and be there for them, and to properly provide and nurture the family that will come from me,” she said.
She also expressed gratitude for the encouragement she has received throughout her time at Lamar University.
“I am thankful for this opportunity. I am thankful for the ones who have been here for me mentally throughout it all,” she said.
Wilkins will graduate this year as part of Lamar University’s ongoing recognition of first-generation students making an impact on campus and in their communities.
The recognition is part of First-Generation Connections, an effort designed to engage, empower and support first-generation Cardinals by ensuring they have the resources needed to persist to graduation. The Office of Strategic Initiatives serves as the central hub for these services and celebrations. At Lamar University, students are considered first-generation if neither parent or guardian earned a bachelor’s degree in the United States. More than half of LU students meet that definition.
