Dr. Alberto Ruiz named dean of College of Education and Human Development

Lamar University is pleased to announce Dr. Alberto Ruiz as the Dean for the College of Education and Human Development. He comes to Lamar University with over 30 years of experience in higher education. Dr. Alberto Ruiz announced as new dean for College of Education and Human Development

“Dr. Ruiz brings a wealth of experience to Lamar University, and his knowledge of Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and Texas Education Agency policies will be incredibly valuable to our continued success in teacher education programs across our curriculum,” Brown said. “I look forward to his impacts on student recruitment and success, academic program development, and faculty productivity.” 

Ruiz earned his baccalaureate and master's degrees in Kinesiology from Texas A&M-Kingsville and a doctorate from the University of Houston.

Ruiz arrives at LU having served as Associate Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Excellence and as Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) at the University of Louisiana – Monroe (ULM). Prior to this position, he served as Dean, College of Education and Human Performance (CEHP) at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK); Associate Dean, CEHP; Chair and Graduate Coordinator for the Department of Health and Kinesiology; and Interim Chair and Doctoral Coordinator for the Department of Bilingual Education at TAMUK. Throughout his career, Ruiz has been active on university, college, and departmental committees addressing administrative, academic, compliance, and athletic issues. He most recently completed his tenure as the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) representative on the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) national board.  

“I am looking forward to getting to know College faculty and staff and have been very impressed by those I have met this summer,” Ruiz said. “I know we are going to reach even greater heights of achievement and success and I look forward to becoming a part of the LU family. As a native Texan, it goes without saying that I am very happy to be back in Texas!
