Lamar University to host saxophone great with Cardinal Jazz Orchestra

Saxophone great Jeff Coffin will be appearing at Lamar University at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13 in the University Theatre for a free concert with the Cardinal Jazz Orchestra.

Coffin, a globally celebrated saxophonist, composer and educator, is a member of the Dave Matthews Band. He is also known from his 14 years — and three Grammy Awards — with Bela Fleck & the Flecktones. He fronts numerous groups when not touring with the Dave Matthews Band and has released more than 17 solo CDs on Ear Up Records.

According to the music department, Coffin is known for his musical passion, his deep commitment to music education and his continued dedication to improvisational music.

He is also a Yamaha Performing Artist and Clinician and a Boston Sax Shop Ambassador. Coffin teaches improvisation at Vanderbilt University, has authored numerous music books and a children’s book, produces, engineers, mixes, draws and runs his own critically acclaimed record label, Ear Up Records.

“Our students are incredibly excited to have the opportunity to perform with such a legendary musician,” said Rick Condit, director of the Cardinal Jazz Orchestra. The band will perform several of Coffin’s original compositions, as well as other contemporary big band music.

In addition to the concert, there will also be an open rehearsal and clinic on the previous night from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12 in the Wiley Band Hall in the Jimmy Simmons Music Building.

The Cardinal Jazz Orchestra concert featuring Coffin and the open rehearsal and clinic are free and open to the public.
