Psychology Clinic under new direction, new vision

Dr. Melanie Webb, clinical psychologist, has taken on a new role at Lamar University as faculty and director of the LU Psychology Clinic.

The Graduate Psychology Clinic provides psychotherapy services free of charge to LU students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the community. Some of the issues that the clinic addresses include anxiety, depression, relationship problems, grief and time management.

“I am excited for the opportunity to get this clinic up and running again after being closed for some time. Doing so will not only create a place for the LU psychology graduate students to complete their practicum, but it will also establish a place for students and members of the communities to receive mental health services free of charge,” said Webb.

Webb, a 5th generation native Texan born in Beaumont, grew up in the Southeast Texas area and graduated from Lumberton High School. She is a clinical psychologist who specializes in forensic practice. Her professional experience includes working in juvenile corrections, forensic units of the state hospital and as a staff psychologist for the Texas Department of Public Safety. Webb found her love of psychology at just 12-years-old after reading a fictional book about a young person who was diagnosed with a mental illness. That book motivated her desire to help people in an area that was much needed.

“My favorite part about this job is that it combines an opportunity to teach new generations about my profession and taking a part in preparing them to do similar work with the active participation in managing the clinic and supervising the students who are learning to become therapists.”

Graduate students in the psychology program will help identify, value and maximize strengths so that our community can meet personal challenges.
