ONLINEU ranks Lamar University’s online bachelor’s degree in sociology and online bachelor’s in criminal justice in the top most affordable online bachelor degree programs in the country in the organizations 2020 Most Online Affordable Colleges.

The 2020 rankings distinguish LU’s online bachelor’s degree in sociology as 10th most affordable and LU’s Affordable Rankingonline bachelor’s degree in criminal justice the 19th most affordable.

“Our department launched these online degree programs about five years ago with just a handful of majors. We now have more than 140 sociology online majors and approximately 300 criminal justice online majors,” said Stuart Wright, chair of the Department of Sociology. “I want to acknowledge the program directors, Dr. Chiung-Fang Chang (sociology) and Dr. Robert Worley (criminal justice) for their diligence and hard work. I also want to acknowledge the efforts of our faculty to expand their online offerings so quickly and efficiently. It hasn’t been easy adjusting to all the changes online programs demand, but I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished.”

Both degree programs at Lamar University are offered in the traditional classroom and online formats to meet the needs of today’s students and to provide access to high-quality programs.

The sociology program prepares students to understand and deal with diversity, modernization and social change locally and globally. All schools OnlineU ranks are regionally accredited and fully online. Tuitions were manually researched and out-of-state tuitions were used unless in-state tuition is offered to all online students. Data considered for the rankings includes available degrees, tuition rates and details about program coursework as well as acceptance rates, programmatic accreditation and profit status of schools.

The methodology for the rankings incorporates a return on investment formula to show accredited programs with the best value. Since the cost and return of a college can significantly vary by the degree, tuition rates and salary numbers are specific to degree-level and major. All tuition rates were manually researched on official school websites in order to ensure accuracy. Salary figures were reported by PayScale and reflect earnings of students 10 or more years after graduation. In order to select the best options for value in each major, OnlineU researched more than 78,000 online programs.

“Our goal is to show data that is difficult to find elsewhere,” said CEO Sung Rhee. “With this launch, Guide to Online Schools shows students what they can reasonably expect to make in salary 10 years after graduating from a particular program. We want people to know how their education choices can measurably impact their financial futures.”
