LU Department of Theatre & Dance presents Canvas in Motion

The Lamar University Department of Theatre & Dance presents an evening of works created by the Applied Choreography Class titled “Canvas in Motion.” This one night only event will be held Friday, April 5, 2019 at 7:30Canvas in Motionp.m. in the University Theatre.

With five works being featured, this compact concert encompasses many personal themes for the young artists including: mourning the loss of a loved one and the psychological states that arise through the grieving process, a personal testimony of faith shown through movement as opposed to words and a whimsical journey down a child-like memory lane. Choreographer Alyssa Vela describes her work through a simple quote, “who are we… what are we… and how can we end this hate?” As creative investigation may demand, one choreographer focused her work as a pure movement study utilizing the body versus conceptual influences to further her personal movement vocabulary. During the process, the artist was able to witness the work grow into something unexpected through the process of the course.

The Applied Choreography class serves as an application of the principles and practices of choreographing a dance. Students are expected to create and showcase a full-length developed creative work while learning to critically analyze dance through a personal process and coordinate diverse viewpoints to support a shared purpose and goal as a class. The students also take on the role of producing the concert from lighting and costuming design to promotions.

“Canvas in Motion” will include works by Brianna Georgie, Jenny Keim, Krysta Quiambao, Alyssa Vela and Sarah Vickery on themes ranging from social stereotypes to personal journeys. We invite you to join us for this FREE evening of experimental performance art with a reception to follow.
