International students face off in soccer tournament

The International Student Council at Lamar University will close out their weeklong International Student Soccer Tournament this Saturday and Sunday.

The tournament, which has been a reoccurring event, aims at bringing different cultures together through friendly competition and the love of sport according to Michael Jiang, director of international student services and recruitment.

On Saturday, Oct. 3, Nepal went head to head with Saudi Arabia, India with China, USA with Africa, and Bangladesh with Mexico-Iran. The resultant winners, India, Africa, Saudi Arabia and Mexico-Iran will play in the semi-finals Saturday, Oct. 10 at Lamar’s soccer complex.

India will face off with Africa at 1:30 pm, followed by Saudi vs. Iran-Mexico at 2:40 p.m. The two winners of Saturday’s matches will compete Sunday in the tournament final, scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon.

The International Student Council has posted various promo videos from the teams in order to bolster spirit and friendly rivalry on their Facebook page.

“I’d like to invite everybody to come watch us play and make this a fun event,” Christian Diaz, who spoke for the Iran-Mexico team, said in a video. “We’re all about togetherness; coming together as one to have fun and celebrate our differences, our culture and heritage. That’s what this is all about, and we’re having a good time and playing some soccer.”

The International Student Council will be live-posting scores, pictures and updates on their Facebook page during the finals and semi-finals this weekend.
