First-gen students who have persevered and will graduate May or August 2026 from Lamar University with an undergraduate degree will receive a free first-gen medallion to wear at commencement. First-gen graduates must register (below) and attend the awards ceremony on May 1.
Last day for students to register is Friday, April 17, 2026 at 5:00pm.
First-gen students and students who support first-gen students can be nominated in one or multiple categories. One student in each category will receive an engraved plaque at the awards ceremony on May 1. Students may nominate themselves or a peer.
Nominations will close Friday, April 3, 2026 at 5:00pm.
Be a first-generation student - neither parent or guardian completed a 4 year degree from a college or university in the United States - or a supporter of first-gen students.
Must be in good standing with the university, Title IX, and Code of Conduct
Demonstrate the characteristics described in each award category
Attend the First-Gen Connections Awards Celebration on Friday, May 1st at 2:00pm
Students can be nominated in one or more of the following awards categories:
Required minimum 3.5 GPA or higher
Completion of advanced honors
Outstanding academic achievements
Actively involved in volunteering or participating in activities that demonstrate humanitarian, education, environment, or charitable efforts
Serves as a role model for compassion and service
Has a passion for helping others in his/her community, and strives to make the world a better place
Makes contributions towards enhancing Lamar University’s global engagement through research, education, and service
Fosters a welcoming environment that is conducive to a comprehensive campus
Makes an impact on the campus and community beyond a local level, positively affecting a broader, international, or industry-wide community
Demonstrates initiative and inspires others to work collaboratively and creatively
Actively mentors and empowers others
Builds strong, collaborative, or influential relationships
Actively involved in the campus community (e.g., student organizations, holds an elected position in a group or organization, etc.)
Completed research or a systematic study directed toward the greater knowledge or understanding of the fundamental aspects of phenomena with observable facts
Research includes supporting evidence and significant, measurable impact
Research topic is relevant and feasible
