  • Michael stated that these subcommittees are going to be reinstated. Assignments to be forthcoming.

Business:

Review of items that need to be considered in order to be placed on the November TSUS Board Meeting agenda related to the Teacher Education Programs degree plans, updates and changes. The majority of the changes are the result of changes that were approved in the core curriculum as well as regulatory changes imposed by their certification boards:

Teacher Education Certification Degree Plans reviewed included: EC-6 Core (elementary); 4-6 ELAR; 4-8 Social studies; 4-8 Complete Science; 4-8 Math; 4-8 Math and Science; 4-8 and Core Subjects.  Debbie Troxclair clarified some of the specific issues that related to degree plan changes as follows:

  • EC-6 covers elementary education but overlaps slightly with middle school preparation as well as the 4-8 curriculum where middle school/splitting of courses is entered into earlier in some school districts.
  • Each of the degree plans have specific course requirements that must be met in addition to the core curriculum for each of the respective teacher certification programs to prepare the students to take the respective teacher certification exam. Those courses are designated with an asterisk(*).
  • It was noted that all of the degree plans exceed the 120 prescribed hours that most of the other B.S. degree plans on Campus have been reduced to. It was explained that in order to meet all of the prescribed core curriculum and the requirements imposed by their governing bodies to prepare students to take their respective certification exams, 120-128 hours was the minimum range for reducing the required hours.
    • On the Math and Science Degree plan both sciences PHYS 1405 and Biol 1406 were listed as three course credit hours and need to be changed to reflect the 4 credit hours that are actually required by the designated course numbers.
    • Please add theatre as an alternative creative arts option to all plans
    • Credit hours in both math and sciences require the students to take two courses of each.
    • Evaluate whether the Library Science Course LIBR 1101 that appears in the Senior I level needs to be on the 4-8 ELAR Degree plan. It is the only plan that the course is listed on.
      • Judy Smith made a motion to blanket approve all of the listed Degree Certification Plans with the above highlighted in bold revisions being corrected.
      • Motion Seconded by: Zanthia Smith
      • Unanimously approved.
  • PEDG 4355
    • Again changes were made due to core curriculum requirement changes
    • The course description in the catalog was different from the syllabus description which has been corrected.
    • Course was designed to help teachers in general classrooms to identify Special Education needs of students.
    • Was originally a 2200 level course but it was felt that the students should complete most of their other degree requirements before taking this course so it was moved to Senior level.
    • GPA pre-requisite was changed to 2.75
    • Course pre-requisites depend on which specialty area of concentration is chosen but all pre-requisites must be completed.
    • Grading Scale should total 765 total points as opposed to the listed 975.
    • It was noted that the grading Scale needs to be revised to the Departmental Standard of: A = 90-100%, B = 89.9%, C = 70-79.9%, D = 60-69.9%, F = 0-59.9%
      • Michael Saar made a motion to approve course syllabus with the minor revision listed above:
      • Motion Seconded by Mamta Singh
      • Unanimously approved.
  • PEDG 3352: Course change in description of the course only.
    • It was noted in the description that EC-6 and 4-8 need to be added as other pre-service areas in addition to the EC-8 specialty as the course content deals with teaching elementary and middle school sciences.
    • It was noted that the Grading Scale needs to be revised to the Departmental Standard of: A = 90-100%, B = 89.9%, C = 70-79.9%, D = 60-69.9%, F = 0-59.9%

    • It was noted that the Grading Scale needs to be revised to the Departmental Standard of: A = 90-100%, B = 89.9%, C = 70-79.9%, D = 60-69.9%, F = 0-59.9%

    • It was also noted that the Grading Scale needs to be revised to the Departmental Standard of: A = 90-100%, B = 89.9%, C = 70-79.9%, D = 60-69.9%, F = 0-59.9%
