Minutes of the Meeting of the Faculty Engagement Subcommittee of the Retention Committee

In attendance:  Jane Liu, Jocelyn Robbins, Kayla Holloway, Daniel Bartlett, Bill Harn, Mike Saar, Jacqueline Jensen-Vallin

Absent:  Amy  Smith, Terry Mena, Julie Eddard, Kate Downing

Previous Recent Efforts

  • The subcommittee was renamed the Faculty Engagement Subcommittee to emphasize our focus on ways to involve faculty in retention efforts.
  • The CTLE Provost’s Kick-Off event engaged many faculty in increasing student success. Approximately 220 faculty members attended this event, which included sessions on SSC Campus, Career Services, Student Leadership programming, LU Care Team, and other student support services on campus. Results of the survey about this event are forthcoming.

Upcoming Efforts

  • Kayla Holloway reported that the SSC campus will be asking each department for five success markers for each degree – what are the key courses and what are the hidden gems that indicate student success? Early indicators will help properly advise students, who can be referred to career services or the UAC for early interventions if students are not making satisfactory progress towards their degree.

Upcoming this fall and spring – faculty training for SSC campus which will engage faculty in retention efforts.

  • Find a way to emphasize the importance of retention by rewarding faculty who engage in these efforts. Maybe encourage faculty to report this on F2.08 or have awards for exceptional service in this area.
  • Market the goal of graduate school early and often for incoming students. Bill Harn will think about ways to make this program available widely, maybe first focusing on Cardinal Community students
  • Find ways to have faculty engage students in goal setting early in their career to help students focus on degree completion and post-graduation plans.
  • Support the Curriculum Council’s progress to obtaining and posting semester-by-semester four-year degree plans for each degree offered on campus to help students set goals and maintain progress. We will work with Deidra’s committee on this effort.
  • Make a recommendation about STEM evaluative testing. Jackie is working on gathering information that will be shared with the Mathematics Department UGCC, this subcommittee, and the UAC for a recommended program and process for this.
  • Coordinate access to tutoring by having a centralized location for this information and/or centralized tutoring services.
