The Graduate Council of Lamar University met in the in the Wimberly Building, Room 219D, Conference Area, at 1:30 p.m. Dr. William Harn, Dean of Graduate Studies, presided. Dr. Nick Rissman, Dr. Ruthie Robinson, Dr. Jimmy Moss, and Dr. Tracy Benson attended. Also in attendance was Theresa Heffner-Babb from Assessment.

 

MINUTES:

The November (#439) meeting minutes were reviewed by the Graduate Council. Dr. Robinson motioned to approve the documents, Dr. Rissman seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

 

OLD BUSINESS:

 

College of Graduate Studies

 

Proposed modification of G-4 Form: Further discussion is required on this topic; therefore, it is tabled for the March meeting.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

 

College of Arts and Sciences:

 

The Department of Computer Science submitted two course additions to the Graduate Council for review:

 

· CPSC 5380 (3D Modeling for Computer Graphics)

· CPSC 5381 (3D Animation for Computer Graphics)

 

The Council reviewed the submissions. Dr. Rissman motioned to approve with minor corrections to the syllabi associated with the documents, Dr. Benson seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved

 

College of Education and Human Development- Department of Counseling

 

The Department of Counseling submitted a proposal to the Graduate Council for review to expand the Master of Education degree in Counseling and Development to 60 credit hours and to include a concentration in Professional School Counseling and a concentration in Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling. Dr. Benson motioned to approve the proposal, Dr. Rissman seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

 

 

 

The associated course additions to the aforementioned proposal were submitted to the Graduate Council:

 

· CNDV 5304 (Foundations of Professional Counseling)

· CNDV 5305 (Counseling Skills and Interventions in Schools)

· CNDV 5306 (Child and Adolescent Counseling)

· CNDV 5307 (Career Development in Schools)

· CNDV 5329 (Assessment and Treatment in Marriage, Couple and Family Counseling)

· CNDV 5333 (Human Sexuality and Counseling Applications)

 

The Council reviewed the submissions and concluded that clarifications are required. The Council agreed to approve the course additions based on corrections to the syllabi. Dr. Benson motioned to approve under conditions, Dr. Rissman seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

 

College of Graduate Studies

 

Inclusion of IRB approval and survey instrument (if applicable) as appendices to thesis/dissertation

 

Dr. Harn presented these questions to the Graduate Council:

 

· “For theses and dissertations that involve research on human subjects, should the IRB approval form be included as an appendix in the document? Should its inclusion be mandatory or optional?”

· “For theses and dissertations that involve use of a survey instrument, should inclusion of the survey as an appendix be mandatory or optional?”

 

Dr. Benson motioned to include in all theses and dissertations, as mandatory appendices, the IRB approval form and survey. Dr. Rissman seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.

 

Grade replacement policy for graduate students

 

Dr. Harn prompted a discussion concerning the currently adopted grade replacement policy and presented the question, “Does the recently adopted grade replacement policy require modification or reconsideration?”

 

Further discussion will be required on this topic; it is tabled for the March meeting.

The next meeting is on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. in the Wimberly Bldg.,
