The Graduate Council of Lamar University met in the Wimberly Bldg., conference area, room 219 at 1:30 p.m. Dr. William Harn, Dean of Graduate Studies, presided. Dr. Jimmy Moss, Dr. Maurice (Nick) Rissman, Dr. Ashwini Kucknoor, Dr. Max Loges, and Dr. Dorothy Sisk attended. Also present were Carmen Breaux, Coordinator of Graduate Studies, as Ex Officio. Dr. William Holmes and Dr. Amy Shows from the College of Education and Human Development also attended the meeting.
MINUTES:
Minutes of the October 12, 2016 (#429) meeting were reviewed by the Graduate Council. Dr. Rissman motioned to approve the document, Dr. Sisk seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.
NEW BUSINESS:
College of Education
Dr. Holmes attended the meeting on behalf of the College of Education to support a Memo that was submitted to the Graduate Council from the Department of Educational Leadership-Doctoral. The Department proposed changes to degree plan that would include diverse global courses of study. The Council carefully listened to Dr. Holmes and asked a few clarifying questions regarding the changes in the courses. After Dr. Holmes was excused from the meeting for the Council to discuss the changes, a motion was made to approve by Dr. Sisk, Dr. Rissman seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.
A Memo was submitted to the Graduate Council for a degree plan change in the Master of Education in Educational Technology. The proposed change is to replace EDLD 5318 (Instructional Design in Online Learning) with EDLD 5303 (Applying Educational Technology: Portfolio). The Council carefully reviewed and discussed the proposal and changes. Dr. Sisk motioned to approve, Dr. Kucknoor seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.
A Memo was submitted to the Graduate Council for proposed changes to Master of Education Teacher Leadership. PEDG 5374, which is a new course to replace PEDG 5366 in the Degree program, PEDG 5374was added and approved at the department, college, and university levels. While the course was approved, the degree program was not included in the change request. The Teacher Leadership Department is now requesting that the degree program which reflects the substitution be officially approved. The Council carefully reviewed and discussed the changes. Dr. Rissman motioned to approve, Dr. Kucknoor seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.
Dr. Amy Shows attended the meeting on behalf of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, to support a Memo that was submitted to the Graduate Council for proposed course changes, additions, and deletions. The submissions are for a new online degree plan in Nutrition that will be submitted at the next Graduate Council meeting.
The course additions submitted are, FCSC 5303 (Nutrition Research), FCSC 5309 (The Energy Nutrients), FCSC 5338 (Complementary and Alternative Nutrition Therapies), FCSC 5388 (Capstone in Dietetics), FCSC 5389 (Nutrition Capstone). The course changes submitted were, FCSC 5332 (Vitamins and Minerals, formerly Vitamins), FCSC 5348 (Nutrition in Pregnancy and Infancy, formerly Maternal & Infant Nutrition), FCSC 5350 (Food, Culture, and Health, formerly, Cultural Foods). The course deletion submitted was, FCSC 5333 (Minerals). The Council carefully reviewed and discussed all of the submissions. Dr. Sisk motioned to approve, Dr. Rissman seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.
A Memo was submitted to the Graduate Council from the Counseling & Special Populations department for a course change to CNDV 5394 (Internship), formerly, Clinical Mental Health Internship. The Council carefully reviewed and discussed the change. Dr. Rissman motioned to approve with clarification through email communication, Dr. Kucknoor seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved with conditions. An email update was sent to Council from Dr. Harn with clarification regarding the course change.
College of Business
A Memo was submitted to the Graduate Council proposing to add a new online Marketing concentration to the existing Master of Business Administration. This concentration will serve students in the M.B.A. program through Academic Partnerships as well as through the Center for Distance Education. The Council carefully reviewed and discussed the proposed concentration. Dr. Sisk motioned to approve, Dr. Rissman seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.
Course changes MGMNT 5311 (Concepts and Applications for New Venture), MGMT 5350 (Strategic Cases in Services Mgmt. & Mktg.), MKTG 5350 (E-Marketing), and course additions, MISY 5380 (Enterprise Systems/CRM), MKTG 5360 (Consumer Behavior), MKTG 5370 (Market Research) were submitted in conjunction with the online proposal to the Graduate Council. Dr. Sisk motioned to approve, Dr. Rissman seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.
College of Arts and Sciences
Course addition CRIJ 5365 (Global Crime Control) was submitted by the Department of Criminal Justice to the Graduate Council. Dr. Rissman motioned to approve, Dr. Moss seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.
Dr. Josh Howard from the Department of History submitted a proposal for new Masters’ degree concentration in Public History to the Graduate Council. The justification for the concentration is to balance public history theory and practice to ensure students are exposed to both the career possibilities and the roots of public history. The Graduate Council carefully reviewed the submission by Dr. Howard from the Department of History. Dr. Rissman motioned to approve, Dr. Kucknoor seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.
Course additions MAPH 5393 (Public History Essentials), MAPH 5394 (Seminar in Public History), MAPH 5395 (Seminar in Local History), MAPH 5396 (Digital History), MAPH 5397 (Museums & Historical Interpretation), MAPH 5398 (Oral History), MAPH 5399 (Public History Lab) were submitted by the Department of History to the Graduate Council. Dr. Rissman motioned to approve, Dr. Kucknoor seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.
College of Fine Arts and Communication
Course additions MUED 5331 (Music Education and Performance) and MUED 5332
(Survey of Music Teaching Methods) were submitted by the Department of Music to the Graduate Council. Dr. Moss motioned to approve, Dr. Sisk seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.
Course addition SPHS 5330 (Communication Management with Severe Disabilities) was submitted to the Graduate Council by the Department of Speech & Hearing. Dr. Sisk motioned to approve, Dr. Moss seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.
Course additions and changes were submitted by the Department of Deaf Studies to the Graduate Council. The course additions were, DSDE 6316 (Research Design & Statistics I), DSDE 6321 (Advanced Qualitative Research), and the course changes were, DSDE 6311 (English Bilingual Literacy & Deaf Studies), DSDE 6317 (Research Design & Statistics II), DSDE 6320 (Introduction to Qualitative Research). The original paperwork that was submitted by the department was not precise and unclear. The Council voted to re-review the documents with clarification via email communication. Dr. Moss motioned to approve with clarification through email communication, Dr. Sisk seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved with conditions. An email was sent to Council with attached corrected documents. The Council reviewed the documents and sent an email reply to approve the corrections to the course additions and changes.
Tabled Item for Speech and Hearing Department. Further research is required before a decision can be made on this submission. This item will continue to be tabled until a decision and approval has been made.
Fall 2016 Review of Applications for Graduate Faculty Membership
The following applicants were recommended to the Graduate Council by the Graduate Faculty Review Committee. Dr. Loges motioned to approve, Dr. Moss seconded the motion, and the Council unanimously approved.
